Sandhill Cranes and Their 6-Day Old Chick

About three weeks ago, a friend took me to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, which is not far from my home. He got news about a new-born sandhill crane there and would like to get a photo or two of the rarely seen chick. The habitat of the birds was fenced off by park staff to protect the birds from too much disturbance, and we had to wait from a distance for the birds to move closer by themselves. Luckily, after less than an hour’s waiting, they did stroll by in front our cameras, at a distance of about 20 feet. Even my 200mm lens was able to get a few good shots of the cute little chick and its extremely protective, caring parents.

However, just a week later, I heard that the chick died in a sudden attack of cold weather. Sad.
